Subversive Malting & Brewing (01/17/21)
After our 6.6 mile hike to Newman’s Ledge, Bear’s Den, Sunset Rock, Prospect Rock, and Artist Rock we were ready for a nice cold beer. Always up for something new we headed to Subversive (drinksubversive.com) (love the name!) in Catskill, NY. Upon walking up we were greeted by privacy fence with two fire pits and two large canvas camp tents beyond. At this
time there was no technically indoor seating but the two tents were equipped with wood burning stoves making extremely comfortable. The
selection of beers offered something for everyone from lagers, to ales, to IPA’s, to stouts, as well as, cider and wine. Being partial to hazy IPA’s we opted for the New York Nectar. The beer’s appearance was bright and hazy with a nice, but not overwhelming, hop aroma. The beer had a nice soft
mouth feel and was drinkable. As is the current state of world we accompanied our beer with some “Cuomo” chips. No onsite food was available when were there but it looks like they may offer some at times or you could bring your own. The owners were the behind the bar and were more than happy to provide advice based on your preferences. The atmosphere was small town chill with a mix of locals and out of towners. The beer was a nice find since many of the craft/nano breweries that are popping up all over seem to aim for quantity over quality. I can’t tell you how many times we have ordered beer only to be presented what amounts to hoppy tasting water. Subversive has done it right with great tasting beer amid a cool vibe. Can’t wait to come back and try some of their other varieties.
